Family First Sunday, July 4

The first Sunday of every other month is a special family Sunday.  All children are in the adult service with their parents until after the worship time and we will observe The Lord’s Supper together.  Because it is a holiday weekend, there will not be a fund-raiser lunch after the service.  Instead there will be a Second Chance Fundraiser lunch the next week, July 11.

Family Reunion Time

So often families choose summer vacation time to plan a reunion.  Pat and I experienced this last week. We went back to the Chicago area and northern Indiana where we both were raised. The justification was to see our first great grandchild. Our children, grandchildren and baby Ashley made the journey from Florida while we flew from California. The primary purpose was to take a five-generation photo. The great great grandmother is 85, and Ashley three months. Wow! Just think, there have been 15 presidents of the United States between those two lives and one of those presidents served 14 years.

One of the delights of a reunion is to see how big the little ones have become. Another delight is to see those family members who have become as gray haired as you.  Ageing loves company!

After all the gatherings, dinners, conversations and general memories, it takes a few days to process what the reunion produced.  My son and I used the final Saturday morning to take a little tour of my past. We visited most of the homes, or places where they once stood, from my childhood. I pointed out where all the old business places used to be and told some old stories and some new ones he had not heard. We finally just sat for awhile and talked as we gazed out over the beach, the pier and Lake Michigan. I recalled that seven generations had walked that pier over the last 117 years. When we finally rejoined the rest of the family I thought to myself, “well maybe now my son will have enough information to preach my funeral 30 or 40 years from now.”  Of all the places I revisited, there was one that will always be the most precious to me–2625 Wabash Street.  It still looks like it did on that Thanksgiving night 56 years ago when I knelt at the front altar of that white block building and asked Christ to be my Savior. That day promised me the greatest family reunion ever known to man. Oh! By the way, that reunion will never end.

Str8-Up Youth Summer Outreaches

Str8-Up Uth; Starts their summer off by helping missionaries and churches reach their communities for Christ.   We are honored and privileged that we are able to help from VBS, Adopt the Block and concerts all for God’s kingdom…

The young man sitting on the stage with Justin came with a friend to VBS. On the way home he asked “what is a bible?” that young man was sent home with his very own bible and that’s what it’s all about.

Kids Campouts at SBCC in July

We are once again planning a couple of overnight campouts on the church property for the children.  This is a fun time of games, food and Bible lessons. Our theme this year is Running the Race. This is in place of a Vacation Bible School for the children.

The first overnight at the church will be July 9 & 10.  It will begin Friday at 5:00pm with dinner served, and end Saturday morning at 9:00am after breakfast.  The second campout will be July 30 & 31.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED:  We need volunteers to help with security, games, food preparation, tent set-up, tear-down, and clean-up.  We also need adults to stay overnight for security.   Please let Virginia know if you have a basketball stand we can use and any other ideas for this fun event.  Many of you have helped in years past and we thank you so much for that.  But we are again asking for any and all who can help this year. There is a sign-up sheet in the lobby where you can indicate what you are willing to do. For additional information, please talk with Virginia Vasquez.

“Indescribable” Service

Indescribable Service, July 11, 6:00pm

On  Sunday night, July 11 at 6:00pm we will present a film that is just “indescribable”.  It presents the magnificence of the universe and helps us see how it has to have been designed by God.  This is interesting and enlightening and will be very beneficial especially to our youth and any who may have had doubts about God as the Creator.

SBCC YOUTH CAMP, JULY 18-25

Youth Camp will precede Family Camp and run through the end of Family Camp.  The cost for the entire week is $125 per person.  The youth will have fund raisers to help with expenses.

SBCC FAMILY CAMP AT PT. MUGU – JULY 22-25

We have reserved our places at Pt. Mugu for Family Camp again this year.  This is a highlight of the summer, especially for those who enjoy camping.  We have a beautiful spot at Big Sycamore Canyon Park on the ocean just north of Malibu. Spaces are limited, however, so you need to begin now to make your reservations for the camp.

The cost is $50 per person or $185 for families of four or more.  This includes campsite and all food and drink.  It does NOT include parking fees which are $10 per day. We need 50% deposit by May 1 to hold your spot and it must be paid in full by July 4th.  There will be no credit offered and no refunds.
